Focus on the Family founder James Dobson is dead at 89.
The Dr, James Dobson Family Institute he founded in 2010 announced its leader’s death Thursday.
“James C. Dobson, one of the most influential Christian leaders of the last half-century and a tireless advocate for the traditional family, passed away on August 21, 2025 at the age of 89,” the announcement said.
Dobson, who hosted a radio show and authored more than 70 books on Christian living, launched Focus on the Family in 1977. The Louisiana native was also politically active, having served on President Donald Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board. He opposed LBGTQ+ and abortion rights.
He is survived by his wife of Shirley, to whom he’d been married for 64 years, and their children, Danae and Ryan.
