Former Buccaneers running back Doug Martin dead at age 36

Doug Martin, who made a mark as an All-Pro running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died over the weekend, his family said Sunday.

He was 36.

“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family told the Tampa Bay Times in a statement. “Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

Martin first blasted onto the football scene at Boise State University, where his solid power crammed into a 5-foot-9 frame earned him the moniker “Muscle Hamster.” Boise State Football said in a tribute that Martin, part of the program from 2007-2011, remains one of the best running backs in school history. A two-time first team all-conference honoree, he also holds top-10 status for numerous records, including career rushing years, yards per carry and rushing touchdowns, Boise State said.

After graduation the Buccaneers snagged Martin in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. He made just as much of a mark during his rookie season, finishing with 1,454 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns and 472 receiving yards.

In 2015, his All-Pro and Pro Bowl season, Martin rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns, according to ESPN, which called it his best season.

The Buccaneers mourned the fallen player, who became a “fan favorite” during his tenure.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a social media post. “From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

He was also “honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements” for the team’s 50th anniversary, the Bucs said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”

Martin played six seasons total with the Buccaneers and one with the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) before retiring in 2018, having struggled with several injuries over those years. In 2016 he was suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s substance use policy and entered treatment rather than appeal.

“The NFL family mourns the loss of Doug Martin,” the pro football league said in a social media post on Sunday. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates.”
