The Jets haven’t wasted time interviewing candidates for their offensive coordinator role.
On Wednesday night, they announced five candidates who virtually interviewed for the vacancy: Darrell Bevell, Ronald Curry, Frank Reich, Greg Roman and Lunda Wells.
Bevell, 56, spent the previous four seasons as the Dolphins’ QB coach and passing game coordinator.
Curry, 46, has been the Bills’ quarterback coach the past two seasons.
Roman, 53, was the Chargers offensive coordinator the last two seasons before he was fired following the AFC Wild Card loss to the Patriots.
Wells, 42, has been the Cowboys tight end coach for the last six seasons.
Former offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and the Jets parted ways on Tuesday. This followed a discussion between Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and Engstrand about Engstrand’s role moving forward.
Now that they have complied with the Rooney Rule, the Jets can make a hire at anytime. Reich, 64, is considered the favorite to be the Jets offensive coordinator.
Before his formal interview, a source confirmed to the Daily News Glenn reached out to Reich about joining the Jets staff in some capacity.
Following a 13-year NFL playing career, Reich has spent nearly two decades in the coaching ranks. He was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator when they won the Super Bowl in 2017. That led to Reich becoming the Colts’ head coach from 2018 to 2022, before he was fired following a 3-5-1 start.
The following year, Reich became the Panthers coach. But he couldn’t even last the entire 2023 season before he was fired after a 1-10 record. Reich spent the 2025 season coaching at Stanford to a 4-8 record, including 3-5 during ACC play.
It feels like the Jets are a bit behind the 8-ball when it comes to finding an offensive coordinator. Their season ended over three weeks ago, and most teams have hired many of the top candidates. In addition to an offensive coordinator opening, the Jets have several other staff openings after Glenn made several firings last week.
To say the Jets’ offense was horrific in 2025 would be an understatement. However, it is difficult to blame Engstrand for that totally. They consistently had dreadful play from the quarterback position, no matter who was the starter.
Signing Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed proved disastrous. He was benched after a 2-9 start with the Jets, after the team had the worst passing offense in the league.
Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook both started games throughout the Jets’ disappointing 3-14 campaign. But they still ranked 29th in yards and points per game and dead last in passing offense.
The good news for the Jets’ next offensive coordinator is that the team is projected to have over $90 million in cap space this offseason. They will also have four picks in the top 44 of the NFL Draft. That also includes two first-round picks after the Jets dealt Sauce Gardner at the trade deadline.
However, the Jets will need to find a quarterback. They are expected to release Fields before the start of the new league year. Glenn is also perceived to be on the hot seat after losing their final five games by a combined score of 188-54.
