Longtime “General Hospital” star Tristan Rogers is living out a real-life medical drama.
“Beloved Emmy-winning actor Tristan Rogers, best known for his role as Robert Scorpio on the daytime drama ‘General Hospital,’ is sharing with fans that he has been diagnosed with cancer,” read a press release obtained by Soap Opera Digest on Thursday.
The statement asked for privacy as 79-year-old Rogers deals with the physical and emotional struggles that lie ahead. His representative promised to provide fans with additional updates when deemed appropriate.
“While he remains hopeful and is working closely with his medical team on a treatment plan, this is a challenging time for Tristan and his family,” the press release said. It did not specify what kind of cancer Rogers has nor how far it has progressed.
The announcement came on the same day that Rogers made a surprise return to “General Hospital,” more than seven months after he last appeared on the soap opera, when his character left Port Charles.
He made his debut on the daytime drama in late 1980 and has starred in more than 1,450 episodes on and off throughout the years. He played a prominent role in the show’s long-running romance between super couple Luke Spencer and Laura Webber, whose 1981 wedding remains the highest-rated hour in American daytime history, according to People. Robert Scorpio served as best man.
With an acting career spanning over 50 years, the Australia native’s resume also includes multiple episodes of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Young and the Restless,” and “The Bay.”
In 2020, he won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Digital Drama Series, for his performance as Doc in Prime Video’s “Studio City.”
