George Santos is vowing to pay back his fraud victims, but admitted the check won’t be in the mail anytime soon.
Days after being freed by President Trump, the disgraced former Republican congressman said he accepts that he should pay restitution to his victims even though the clemency order means he’s not legally obligated to do so.
“When the time is right, and I have the financial means, I am going to do it, Santos said in a Wednesday night interview on NewsNation. it’s the only way that I can resolve my quarrels of the past and to right the wrongs of my past, and then move forward.”
Santos insisted he wouldn’t run from the harm he caused.
“It’s not a matter of dodging it,” Santos said. “I want to do what is morally correct.”
On Thursday, Santos woke up to treat his social media followers to a flurry of tweets about his morning coffee (three cups up), Victoria’s Secret underwear (it’s so back!) and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani (not a fan).
He suggested in a cryptic post that he won’t be doing anything to make life easier for his critics.
“Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness,” Santos tweeted. “My attitude depends on who you are.”
Santos walked out of federal prison a free man on Friday after Trump granted him clemency. The order scraps his seven-year prison sentence for fraud and identity theft.
Trump’s order also nixed the $370,000 in restitution a judge ordered him to make to victims, mostly would-be campaign donors he duped.
The one-time GOP rising star won a Long Island congressional seat in 2022 in a major upset. He was expelled from Congress a year later after conceding he fabricated much of his resume and lied on campaign finance reports.
