Former “Mandalorian” star Gina Carano announced on Thursday that her legal battle with Disney has come to an end.
“I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved,” she wrote X, which is owned by billionaire right-wing activist Elon Musk, who financed her lawsuit when it was filed early last year.
“I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk… a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit,” she added. “Thank you Mr. Musk and X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return.”
Carano’s suit came years after she claimed she was wrongfully fired from the “Star Wars” spinoff in 2021 due to conservative political beliefs she expressed online. Among those were social media posts that challenged the results of the 2020 election, mocked transgender rights and compared the Holocaust to the circumstances of conservatives in the present-day U.S.
Carano’s suit — which argued that California law protects workers’ rights to engage in political activity — sought a court order that would require her role in “The Mandalorian” to be reinstated, as well as compensation for emotional damages she says she suffered.
Disney responded two months later by filing a motion to get the suit thrown out, claiming the company had every right to fire Carano. They countered there’s an exception to the law for entertainment companies, who are allowed to protect themselves against employees who speak out in ways that could reflect negatively on the companies themselves.
The terms of Carano’s settlement have not been disclosed, though Disney expressed gratitude that its differences with Carano had finally been resolved.
“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect,” the company said in a statement. “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
