General Motors is recalling almost 600,000 Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC vehicles because of potential engine failure due to a defect.
The recall covers 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500s, Suburbans and Tahoes, the company said in an April 24 recall notice. It also covers 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs, and GMC Sierra 1500s, Yukons and Yukon XLs.
The problem stems from the vehicles’ 6.2-liter V8 engines, according to GM. The connecting rod and crankshaft engine components could have manufacturing defects, which may cause engine failure.
While GM recalled nearly 600,000 vehicles, the company anticipates only 3% will actually require repairs, according to recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
People with recalled vehicles can take them to Chevrolet dealers for repairs at no cost, GM said. The company will begin mailing notification letters on June 9.
“The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible,” GM said in a statement.
Federal regulators began investigating GM vehicles in January, after receiving dozens of complaints about the V8 engines. The complaints reported there was no warning prior to sudden engine failure, significantly increasing the risk of crashing.
