Hey you guys, here’s the truth!
The cast of “The Goonies” shut down a long-standing rumor about the 1985 adventure comedy as they reunited at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano participated in a panel discussion ahead of the film’s 40th anniversary and denied that they saw One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship for the first time on camera.
“I was sort of offended that they had that idea, that they wouldn’t let the kids see the pirate ship, so that they could capture their real reaction,” said Astin, 54, per People.
“Like, what? We don’t know how to do real? We did real reactions all the time,” he added.
Astin continued, “But I remember wanting to perform in such a way, because I had had a sneak peek of it. So I wanted to perform in a way that really made them think that they had captured the honest reactions, so they would for 40 years be like, ‘Oh, we got these kids to do this thing!’”
Plimpton, 54, chimed in and insisted, “I hadn’t seen it. My performance was honest.”
When Pantoliano, 73, asked his former co-star, “How many takes of your reaction did they do?”, Plimpton responded, “One. [That’s] all they needed, baby.”
“The Goonies” was directed by Richard Donner, who died in 2021 at age 91. Steven Spielberg devised the story for the classic family movie, which followed a group of neighborhood kids living in Astoria, Oregon, who head out on a perilous adventure.
The film made $125 million at the worldwide box office and has become a cult classic in the last four decades.
Several cast members have died including John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Mary Ellen Trainor, Keith Walker and Lupe Ontiveros.
Some of the remaining stars reunited recently at Ke Huy Quan’s hand and footprint ceremony in Los Angeles in February.
That same month, it was confirmed that a “Goonies” sequel is in the works with Spielberg and Chris Columbus serving as producers. A director has yet to be announced.
“We love that Steven Spielberg is engaged and back in the Goonies mindset, so that’s exciting for all of us, and whatever happens, we hope that it’s worth it,” said Feldman, 53, about the sequel at Awesome Con.
Plimpton added, “I think [fans are] going to see ‘The Goonies 2,’ whether we’re in it or not. I think that’s pretty obvious. At least, I hope [they] will.”
