Gov. Gavin Newsom announces Menendez brothers’ parole hearing date

California governor Gavin Newsom announced convicted murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez will have a parole board hearing in June.

The June 13 hearing will include the results of a risk assessment Newsom ordered last month to determine whether the brothers are still a risk to the public and if they are eligible for clemency.

Receiving clemency from the governor is one of the few paths remaining for the brothers’ legal fight after new Los Angeles district attorney Nathan Hochman reversed his predecessor’s recommendation that the brothers be resentenced and made eligible for immediate parole.

The aspiring Democrat leader announced the date on his podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom.”

“Both Lyle and Eric Menendez independently will have their final hearing. A report then will be submitted to me on the thirteenth of June for consideration,” Newsom said. “We will submit that report to the judge for the resentencing, and that will weigh into our independent analysis of whether or not to move forward with the clemency application to support a commutation of this case.”

The brothers were sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills mansion. They claimed self-defense and fear of their father, whom they say abused them sexually and physically. Prosecutors argued they wanted to inherit their parents’ fortune.
