Gunman shoots Kentucky state trooper, injures churchgoers

A Kentucky State Police trooper was shot near Blue Grass airport Sunday by a suspect who then allegedly fled up the road to a church, where he injured “multiple people” before being fatally shot by police, authorities said.

The suspect “shot a trooper and then fled the scene” at 11:36 a.m. in Fayette County, KSP said in a post on X. He next showed up at Richmond Road Baptist Church, in a rural area of southeast Lexington. There, state troopers and the Lexington Police Department “were able to secure the suspect,” KSP said. The suspect was dead and the trooper was receiving medical attention, authorities said.

Police did not immediately identify the suspect. EMS were treating multiple victims at the church, but authorities did not release the exact number or condition of those injured, WLEX-TV reported.

“Kentucky, we are aware of a series of incidents in Lexington around one suspect, including a trooper-involved shooting and an additional shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church with multiple injuries,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement. “The trooper and others are being treated at a nearby hospital. Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police. Details are still emerging, and we will share more information as available.”
