A Harlem grandmother was fatally struck in the head by a stray bullet when she heard gunshots and went to check on her grandson outside, according to a report.
The 61-year-old victim was inside her apartment when she heard a fight between two groups followed by shots ringing out about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to PIX11.
When she went outside to check on her grandson she was shot in the head on Lenox Ave. near W. 113th St., according to the station.
The shooter’s intended target, a 23-year-old man, was struck in the left foot and is recovering, police said. That victim is not related to the grandmother, police said.
Cops nearby heard the gunshots and raced to the scene
A man police described as a person of interest was taken into custody and is being questioned.
Medics rushed the grandmother to Mount Sinai Morningside but she could not be saved, police said. Her name was not immediately released.
The intended target is in stable condition at the same hospital.
