Heartbroken mom of fatally shot Bronx man says he was getting her snack when attacked

A young man on an errand to pick up a snack for his mom was fatally shot in a Bronx deli Thursday afternoon, his devastated family told the Daily News.

Sorai King, 20, was on his way to the store around 1:30 p.m. when he was shot in the neck and chest near E. 217th St. and Bronxwood Ave. in Williamsbridge, police said.

EMS transported King to Jacobi Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him deceased.

Distraught family members told The News that King was on his way to pick up some food for his mother, Sonja King.

“He was going to the store for his mother. He was very loving. He went to the store and he never came back,” the victim’s 15-year-old niece Nana King said. “We only knew something was wrong when the detectives came.”

“He was very loving, and if I had any problems, I could always run to him,” the niece said before dissolving into tears.

Sonja King said her youngest son was about to graduate from high school and planned to go into the trades.

“He was a smart kid. He was just graduating from Independence High School here in the Bronx,” the mom said. “He just got (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certified. He wanted to do construction. That was my youngest son. It’s heartbreaking.”

The victim’s aunt, Mary Deyo, 38, told The News her nephew “was a good kid.”

“He was just going to the store. He didn’t bother anybody,” Deyo said, adding: “We want justice.”

The manager of the bodega, who witnessed the clash, said the victim and another man were fighting outside the store before they both ran into the bodega.

“They were fighting outside the store. They both ran in and he shot him,” said the manager of Shak Deli, who declined to give his name for fear of retaliation.

He said he didn’t know what the fight was about.

“I don’t know them. They weren’t customers,” the deli manager said. “They just ran in and he fired. He was dead.”

There have been no arrests; police said the investigation is ongoing..
