It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s “Superman” on HBO Max!
On the heels of the announcement that “Man of Tomorrow,” a sequel to 2025’s “Superman,” is officially on its way, James Gunn’s “Superman” movie has made its way to HBO Max. Beginning today, Sept. 17, the movie is available to all HBO Max subscribers.
The latest “Superman” to hit theaters, the movie reboots the character without serving as a true origin story. Instead, viewers are dropped into the story and introduced to a new Superman (David Corenswet, replacing Henry Cavill), who has already been serving the people of Metropolis for three years when the film begins.
The movie finds Superman facing unintended consequences after intervening in an international incident orchestrated by evil billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). As larger threats loom, the Man of Steel must win back the public’s support with the help of the Justice Gang and his alter-ego’s colleagues at the Daily Planet.
The Post’s entertainment critic Johnny Oleksinski called Gunn’s colorful reboot “unrecognizable, thank Zod, from Zack Snyder’s dark and dreary ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” noting that “you leave the entertaining ‘Superman’ not confused or clobbered, but feeling good.”
‘Superman’ HBO Max release date:
“Superman” is now streaming on HBO Max! The movie was released on the platform today, Sept. 19.
How to watch ‘Superman’ (2025) for free:
If you’re new to HBO Max, you can sign up for as low as $9.99/month with ads, but an ad-free subscription costs $16.99/month.
Both plans, via Prime Video, come with a seven-day free trial, which is more than enough time to stream “Superman” a couple of times (and catch up on the DCU’s “Peacemaker” while you’re at it).
If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the discounted Disney+ Bundles with Hulu and HBO Max. With ads, the bundle costs $16.99/month and without ads, $29.99/month.
‘Superman’ cast guide:
As noted above, David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent / Superman in the 2025 “Superman” movie. He’s joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Clark’s “Daily Planet” colleagues are played by Skylar Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Wendell Pierce (Perry White), Mikaela Hoover (Cat Grant), and Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard).
The Justice Gang, consisting of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, are also introduced in “Superman” in addition to Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho.
Other supporting roles include Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría plays Angela Spica / The Engineer, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., with Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Pa and Ma Kent.
Other DCU movies and shows on HBO Max:
While “Superman” is the first movie to exist solely on James Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU), there are already a few DCU shows available on HBO Max, in addition to past DC titles that Gunn says may be loosely connected in the future.
Right now, you can stream the first season of “Creature Commandos,” an animated series about a black ops team led by Rick Flag Sr. (Grillo), set in the aftermath of “Peacemaker” Season 1.
Speaking of “Peacemaker,” the John Cena-led series is mid-Season 2 with new episodes dropping weekly; the new set of episodes is set directly following “Superman,” while the first season (produced before the DCU began) is mostly canon to the current state of DC.
Due to that, many of the events of “The Suicide Squad,” Gunn’s 2021 film that introduced Cena’s Peacemaker and other current DCU side characters, and “Peacemaker” Season 1 are considered “a rough memory of what happens in the DCU,” according to Gunn.
All of these titles can be streamed with HBO Max’s free trial.
