Jen Giattino, Hoboken council president and a mother of three, died suddenly shortly after returning from a trip to Japan. She was 52.
Her husband, Joe Giattino, revealed the tragic news in a statement on Tuesday to the Hudson County View, but he did not provide a cause of death. He remembered his late wife as an “incredible mother” and a “dedicated public servant who cared deeply about this community.
“Jen’s unwavering commitment, kindness, and passion touched so many lives here in Hoboken,” he added.
“We are devastated by her loss, and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time,” the statement concluded. “Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”
Mayor Ravi Bhalla also mourned Giattino’s unexpected death. He said she was a “cherished figure” within the community, known for her “kindness, humility, and quiet determination.”
“There are no words to describe the sense of loss we are all feeling. Jen was a leader in our community and a fighter for all of us,” Balla said. “Hoboken has lost a bright light, and she will be deeply missed.”
Giattino had lived in Hoboken since 1998. She was first elected to city council in 2011, and then re-elected in 2015, 2019, and 2023. In 2017, she also ran for mayor, but lost to Bhalla.
In January, Giattino returned to the role of council president a sixth time following a three-year break, NJ.com reported.
“I am excited and humbled to be back as council president for the city I love,” she said at the time. “Looking forward to collaborating with my council colleagues and the people of Hoboken to address challenges and create a Hoboken that thrives.”
