Nearly four years after an accidental on-set shooting killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the western “Rust” is now available to stream at home.
Alec Baldwin stars in the film as a reclusive outlaw lured out of hiding after his 13-year-old grandson is sentenced to death for an accidental killing. “Rust” will have a limited theatrical release beginning today, May 2, but the film is also now available to buy or rent from video-on-demand retailers, including Prime Video.
In October 2021, Hutchins, 42, was killed. Baldwin fired a prop gun that had been mistakenly loaded with a live round. Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter in the months following the shooting; Baldwin’s trial was dismissed due to prosecutors intentionally withholding critical evidence from the defense, while Gutierrez-Reed’s 18-month sentence was upheld.
Earlier this year, a documentary made by a close friend of Hutchins was released; it examines her life, work, and death.
“Rust” was able to be completed and released, in part, due to an agreement made with Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins. He received an executive producer credit on the film, and per The Hollywood Reporter, the Hutchins’ son, Andros, will benefit financially from the sale of the film.
