It’s been over five years since HBO’s four-part documentary series “The Case Against Adnan Syed” premiered, and tonight, Sept. 18, a follow-up fifth episode will be released.
Director Amy J. Berg, who made the four original episodes, returns to chronicle what happened in the years since “The Case Against Adnan Syed” first came out.
Syed, the subject of the “Serial” podcast, convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999, had his conviction thrown out in 2022 and was released from prison.
Per HBO’s official synopsis, the new episode “chronicles the turns in the case that unfold after a suspect from the original investigation into Lee’s murder is caught assaulting a woman. This development led Adnan’s legal team to revisit the case and demand a new investigation. When the state attorney’s office steps in, the prosecution pushes back, resulting in a legal and political tug of war that thrusts Adnan’s case into chaotic uncertainty.”
