Move over “Oppenheimer,” there’s a new reigning Best Picture.
After winning the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and the top prizes at the Critics Choice, Writers Guild, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild Awards, Sean Baker’s “Anora” won Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars.
The independent film, nominated for six Oscars, won five; in addition to Best Picture, Baker won the awards for Best Director, Film Editing, and Original Screenplay. In doing this, he became only the second person ever to win four Oscars in one night, behind Walt Disney, who achieved the feat in 1953. Baker still makes history as the only person to win four Oscars in one night, all for the same film.
“Anora”s fifth win came when star Mikey Madison was awarded Best Actress over “The Substance” star Demi Moore in a huge upset.

“Anora” is a darkly comedic twist on the classic Cinderella story that follows erotic dancer and sex worker Ani, who connects with the son of a Russian oligarch, Vanya, and marries him so he can stay in the United States. What follows is a modern screwball comedy that takes our characters all over Brooklyn in a mad dash to end — or save — a marriage.
