Two people drowned in dangerous currents kicked up by Hurricane Erin over the weekend, and a Massachusetts man remained missing Tuesday after his boat capsized in the rough waters.
Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, drowned Saturday while swimming off the coast of Fire Island, Suffolk County police said.
Mohammed was swimming when a rip current caught him and pulled him westward, cops said. Lifeguards eventually brought him to shore, but the South Carolina native was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The next day, 200 miles northeast at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire, a 17-year-old boy was also caught in a rip current and drowned, New Hampshire state police said. The teen was swimming with family members when he was pulled away by the current.
The boy’s father ventured into the water to try to save him, but he too was quickly overcome by the current and had to be rescued by lifeguards, authorities said. While the father was saved, the teen was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His identity was not released.
Just south of Hampton Beach off the coast of Salisbury, Mass., a man in his 50s remained missing Tuesday, following days of searching the area. The man was boating with a friend on Saturday afternoon when their vessel capsized, authorities said. While the other man was quickly rescued, his partner remained missing despite an extensive Coast Guard search.
