Out of the office.
Following the dramatic Season 2 finale of “Severance,” viewers have many questions about where the Apple TV+ sci-fi series goes next.
But one of the biggest mysteries surrounds John Turturro and his future on the show.
The 68-year-old actor, who plays Irving, appeared in every episode of “Severance” Season 1. But that wasn’t the case in Season 2, which saw Innie Irving be terminated for exposing Helena posing as Helly at the end of Episode 4.
Turturro made his final Season 2 appearance in the penultimate episode, where Burt (Christopher Walken) sends Outie Irving away on a train to flee Lumon. Irving is completely absent from the season finale.
Apple officially confirmed that a Season 3 is in the works — and it won’t take years to return.
Turturro has been absent from multiple “Severance” press events that have taken place since the finale. He skipped the PaleyFest panel on March 21 and a promo event near the London Bridge on March 26. He also didn’t go to the Grand Central Station pop-up event before the season premiered in January.
Meanwhile, his cast members Adam Scott (Mark), Britt Lower (Helly), Zach Cherry (Dylan), Patricia Arquette (Cobel), Dichen Lachman (Gemma), Tramell Tillman (Milchick) and Jen Tullock (Devon), director Ben Stiller, and creator Dan Erickson have been out and about promoting the Emmy Award-winning show — with no explanation on where Turturro is.
Walken, 81, has also been MIA from the post-season press tour.
In an interview with The Wrap before Season 3 was announced, Turturro said he’s had “open” conversations with Stiller, 59, and Erickson, 41, about bringing Irving back.
“If there’s stuff that’s good and active and interesting to do, then I could see that, yeah,” Turturro said. “If people wanted there to be [a third season], there could be, and there could be big, big surprises too. You know, Irving’s left all those paintings behind. There’s a reason why they went into his apartment, why they’re looking around.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after the penultimate episode, Turturro hinted he wants off “Severance” when he said he’s “not used” to being on a multi-season series.
“I’m used to doing a miniseries, a kind of arc,” the “Monk” star said. “I guess they have some backstory [in ongoing series television], but still, you’re writing it and then there are other writers involved, and how people are reacting to it while watching it and all of those things.”
“So you don’t know who’s going to leave, who’s going to come back and, are they going to come back as their inside or outside selves?” he continued. “The whole thing is a mind warp!”
But Turturro did say that he wouldn’t be satisfied if Irving’s story ends with the train scene.
“If someone wanted the story to be complete? It could be! But I think there’s so much more here,” he said.
Turturro has two movies in the works that could get in the way of his future on “Severance.”
Last year, he was cast in Stephen Frears’ comedy drama “Wilder & Me,” alongside Christopher Waltz, Maya Hawke and Jon Hamm. Turturro is also set to star in the drama “Bless Me Father” which is currently in pre-production.
