‘It felt kind of surreal’

A grieving Jazz Chisholm Jr. achieved a personal milestone in the Yankees’ 7-2 win over the Red Sox on Sunday, as the second baseman hit the 100th home run of his career when he pulled a two-run shot off Dustin May in the second inning.

After the game, which saw Chisholm add another two-run homer in the eighth, he was asked what it meant to him to join baseball’s Century Club. At that point, Chisholm revealed that he had lost someone close to him on Saturday.

“It felt kind of surreal,” an understandably somber Chisholm said. “I lost my best friend yesterday, so today felt like a different type of day.”

While Chisholm preferred to keep details of his loss private, he did say he had been “going through a lot” in the last 30 hours or so. On Saturday, he posted a story to Instagram that mentioned the death.

On Sunday, ESPN cameras caught Chisholm teary-eyed in the Yankees’ dugout as he embraced Aaron Judge for a hug following his 100th homer.

Still stricken with sadness, Chisholm did take time to meet up with the fans who caught his milestone home run. The 27-year-old got the ball back; he didn’t mention what he had to trade for it.

He was glad that his home run came in a win, especially one that helped the Yankees avoid a four-game sweep while simultaneously gaining some ground in the American League Wild Card race.

“We definitely needed this one tonight,” Chisholm said. “A little momentum going into the next series. We’re trying to make it to the playoffs, but we’re definitely just trying to take it day by day and win by win.”

Chisholm now has 24 home runs this season, tying him with Cody Bellinger for third-most on the Yankees. Chisholm is also hitting .239/.333/.484 with 62 RBI, 22 stolen bases and a 127 wRC+.
