An interview with Jennifer Lopez on the “TODAY” show took an awkward turn when anchor Craig Melvin asked about the end of her marriage to Ben Affleck.
While interviewing “Jenny From the Block” singer about her musical film “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Melvin asked a question about her recent divorce.
“In the middle of filming this elaborate, beautiful musical, your divorce was also finalized with Ben,” Melvin mentioned before Lopez cut him off, responding, “There you go! Look at this guy!”
Melvin defended his question noting, “But then I read that your ex is an executive producer on the film.”
Lopez acknowledged her ex-husband, saying, “If it wasn’t for Ben, the movie wouldn’t have gotten made. And I will always give him that credit.”
The “Get Right” singer then added, “And yeah, things happen, you have to keep going.”
Although Lopez didn’t directly speak on her split from Affleck, she alluded to how the film helped her through a difficult time.
“It’s funny, the movie is about escapism. It’s about how movies and art save us in the hardest times of our lives,” she said. “Doing this project was such a dream come true for me that it really got me through to kind of survive a moment that was difficult in my personal life as well.”
Melvin responded, “And it sounds like it might have helped saved you,” to which the actress agreed, “It did, it did!”
After breaking off their first engagement back in 2004, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance in 2021 and married in 2022. Two years after tying the knot, they parted ways again and finalized their divorce in January of 2025.
In an interview with “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Lopez said filming the musical amid the split was challenging.
“It was a really tough time,” she shared. “Every moment on set, every moment I was doing this role, I was so happy, and then it was like, back home, it was not great.”
