Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt cleared up the rumors that they’re feuding.
Fans began speculating that the two actresses were at odds after Gellar’s snippy red carpet exchange at the “Dexter: Original Sin” premiere on Wednesday, where she was asked if Hewitt, 45, is returning for the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel film.
“I have nothing to do with that,” Gellar, 47, said before walking away from the interviewer.
Hewitt later confirmed her return as Julie James to the franchise in an Instagram post on Friday. Hewitt and Gellar both starred in the original 1997 slasher film, but Gellar won’t be joining Hewitt and her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., in the new film.
After her dismissive response to the question about her former co-star went viral, Gellar clarified the situation on her Instagram Story Friday.
“Aspiring actors please note: This ‘deer in the headlights’ reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month,” Gellar wrote alongside a photo from the film’s set.
Gellar was referring to how she previously leaked an on-set photo while Prinze Jr., 48, was filming in Australia on Thanksgiving.
Hewitt later caught wind of the rumors about her and Gellar and set the record straight on Tommy DiDario’s “I’ve Never Said This Before” podcast.
“I just heard that there’s this whole thing where they think that Sarah and I were fighting or something. There’s all these things out there,” Hewitt said.
“I’ve really enjoyed going and trying to read the stuff now and be like, ‘What are people saying about when we did the movie before, now, all of that stuff?’” the actress continued. “Somebody the other day was like, ‘Yeah, I think Julie made sure that she was killed because girl actresses don’t like to work with girl actresses.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’”
“I was 18,” Hewitt noted. “They were not taking script notes from me guys. Like what are you talking about?”
The “Party of Five” star also confirmed that she got along with Gellar when they worked together in the ’90s.
“All of us were in that experience together, kind of figuring it all out and everything,” she recalled. “I root for her and Freddie and think it’s the cutest thing in the world that they’ve been married for 100 years and have kids. It’s adorable. So yeah it’s been really funny to see all this stuff that people think.”
Hewitt, Gellar and Prinze Jr. starred alongside Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, Bridgette Wilson and the late Anne Heche in “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
Gellar and Prinze Jr. met on the set of the film and got married five years later. They have two children, daughter Charlotte Grace, 14, and son Rocky James, 11.
The new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie will feature Hewitt and Prinze Jr. with new cast members Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Austin Nichols. The film comes out July 18, 2025.
