Jets have second interview with Frank Reich for offensive coordinator position: sources

The Jets continue their offensive coordinator search on Tuesday.

Gang Green conducted an in-person interview with Frank Reich for the vacant role, sources confirmed to the Daily News.

Reich previously met with the Jets virtually last week, a day after the team and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand parted ways. He is the third candidate to have a second interview for the job. Dolphins quarterback coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell and former Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman both spoke with the team on Monday.

In addition to Reich, Bevell, and Roman, the Jets have also had virtual interviews with Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells about the position.

Following a 3-14 season, the Jets and head coach Aaron Glenn have experienced significant turnover on his coaching staff. Only five position coaches from last season remain on staff (defensive back/pass game coordinator Chris Harris, special teams coordinator Chris Banjo, wide receiver coach Shawn Jefferson, offensive line coach Steve Heiden and running back coach Nic McKissic-Luke). That’s significant staff turnover considering they were each hired a year ago, after Glenn became coach.

Reich, 64, is considered a favorite to land on Glenn’s staff. After playing in the NFL for 13 seasons, Reich has been in the coaching ranks for almost two decades. He was most notably the Eagles’ offensive coordinator when they won the Super Bowl in 2017. Reich then became the Colts head coach in 2018 until he was fired in 2022 after eight games.

After his stint in Indianapolis, Reich was hired as the Panthers coach in 2023. But he didn’t even make it the whole season before Reich was fired following a 1-10 start. Last year, Reich was the interim coach at Stanford, leading the team to a 4-8 record, including 3-5 during ACC play.

Whoever becomes the Jets next offensive coordinator will have a lot of work to do. They finished 29th in yards and scoring after top wideout Garrett Wilson missed 10 games because of a knee injury.

Gang Green also benched Justin Fields after nine starts and started Tyrod Taylor and undrafted rookie Brady Cook for the final seven games of the season. With Cook starting the final four games, the Jets were outscored 188–54.
