Following a disastrous 3-14 season, the Jets will have several decisions to make this offseason.
What will help is their abundance of cap space and draft capital.
The Jets are expected to have over $90 million to spend in free agency. They will also have eight picks in April’s draft. All that is well and good, but none of it matters if the Jets don’t have the staff to develop a young quarterback.
Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is expected to return next season. However, the offensive staff surrounding him could change drastically.
Gang Green had one of the worst offenses in the NFL in 2025 after finishing 29th in yards and points scored. The quarterback carousel of Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook also struggled under Engstrand and quarterback coach Charles London. The Jets had the league’s worst passing offense, averaging 140.3 yards through the air.
To end the season, the Jets scored 10 points or fewer in four of their final five games. The Jets offense was so deficient that Garrett Wilson, who hadn’t caught a pass since Oct. 12, led the team in receiving yards (395).
“I think the first season as offensive coordinator, it had some really good ups and some downs,” Engstrand said last week. “There’s been some really good things and there’s been some things we know we can learn upon. And so, for me, personally, there’s definitely things that I look back on and I’ve reflected on over the last several weeks that maybe I would adjust and do a little bit differently going forward.
“But I think it’s been really, really good. I think we’ve got our system in for the most part, there’s always going to be more, but I think we have a good foundation of what we’re trying to build as a team and as a culture in the building, and how we want to play, and what our brand is. And then we will continue to sharpen that and hone that in as we head into the offseason.”
While the Jets offense floundered as a whole, there were some positives to take away from Engstrand’s first season as offensive coordinator. They started the same offensive line in all 17 games for the first time since 2012. That is remarkable considering just two years ago, the Jets used 13 different starting line-up combinations in 17 games in 2023 due to various injuries.
Armand Membou has already become one of the better right tackles in the league. He excelled both as a pass and run blocker, but Membou needs to work on eliminating penalties and sacks. He committed 11 penalties and gave up eight sacks in 17 games.
Membou and left tackle Olu Fashanu represent two of the Jets’ young foundation on which they can build their offense.
“Unique man, they are both so talented,” Jets center Josh Myers said. “I have so much respect for both of them in their process. They were really fun to play with this year.”
Tight end Mason Taylor also showed a lot of potential, especially during his final four games before missing the last four due to a neck injury. He finished with 44 catches for 369 yards and a touchdown.
The Jets will enter this offseason possibly needing starters at quarterback, running back, two wide receiver spots, and left guard. Fields will likely be released after he was benched after nine starts. Breece Hall and John Simpson are both scheduled to be free agents in March.
Following their 35-8 season finale loss to the Bills, Glenn took ownership of the Jets’ abysmal season. He also promised to improve the team and turn around a Jets team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2010, the longest postseason drought in North American sports.
“I’ve been there and I’ve done that,” Glenn said. “So, that’s why my confidence is not shaken, and I can go all the way back from my time in Cleveland to New Orleans to Detroit. Been there and done that and, listen, I understand what everybody on the outside is saying and I’m going to take all those arrows and that’s okay.
“Because I do know this, it’s going to turn. It’s going to turn and I am very confident in that, so I look forward to getting back. I look forward to starting this offseason. I look forward to sitting down with Moug. I look forward to sitting down with Woody (Johnson) and putting our heads together and talking about how we’re going to get this thing turning in the right direction. “
