Jets QB Justin Fields left Sunday’s loss vs. Bills with concussion

Jets quarterback Justin Fields suffered a concussion during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 30-10 loss against the Bills.

With 12:03 remaining, Fields was sacked by Joey Bosa, and he exited the field and went into the Jets medical tent to be evaluated.

The back of Fields’ head hit the turf and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor replaced him. Jets coach Aaron Glenn confirmed in his postgame press conference that Fields is in concussion protocol, leaving his status for next Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers in doubt.

“Still have to evaluate that,” Glenn said about Fields.

After an encouraging game against the Steelers in which the Jets lost 34-32 in Week 1, Fields struggled before leaving the game. He completed just 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards.

The most alarming aspect of Fields’ performance was his lack of accuracy. After playing one of the best games of his career against the Steelers, Fields was off-target on passes to Garrett Wilson and other Jets receivers. It was reminiscent of his uneven performances in training camp in which Fields struggled with ball placement and holding onto the ball too long.

When asked about Fields’ performance on Sunday against the Bills, Glenn said he would “have to watch the tape.”

“I don’t know, man,” Wilson said about the Jets offense. “I don’t know. All week, you feel like you’ve got a good plan.

“We had a good week of practice and you come out and lay an egg when it matters. We’ve got to figure it out. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know exactly how that happens and props to them.”

If Fields misses next week’s game against Tampa, it would be Taylor who would start in his place. Throughout his 15-season career, Taylor has 58 career starts. The last time Taylor started a game was in 2023 when he was the Giants’ backup quarterback.

In relief for Fields, Taylor completed 7-of-11 passes for 56 yards and his touchdown pass to Jeremy Ruckert was the Jets’ lone touchdown against the Bills.

“There’s a number of things, to be honest with you,” Glenn said about what disappointed him about Sunday’s performance. “But those are things I want to make sure I look at the tape before I just start to ramble off on some things.”
