All flights in and out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports have been delayed or canceled as the Federal Aviation Administration has placed traffic restrictions on the three airports due to high winds amid ongoing staffing shortages, officials said on Friday.
A ground stop is currently in effect at JFK, halting takeoffs and landings today until 7:30 p.m., with incoming flights being held at their departure airports. After 7:30 p.m. only 30 planes per hour will be allowed to land at JFK until late Friday night, with the restriction then lifting slightly to 36 planes per hour through Saturday morning.
LaGuardia and Newark airports are under similar delays for the same combination of high winds and staffing issues.
Travelers should expect widespread delays, including from an hour to 100 minutes for arrivals at JFK, 100 to 170 minutes for arrivals at Newark, and from 140 minutes to up to five hours for arrivals at LaGuardia, according to authorities.
Winds up to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected until around midnight, according to the National Weather Service.
More restrictions could be added if conditions worsen.
