He’s feeling dune with Hollywood.
After the 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, Josh Brolin went on a rant slamming the Academy for snubbing his “Dune” director, Denis Villeneuve, and snarked that in response, he will “quit acting.”
Brolin, 56 posted an Instagram Story following the announcement of this year’s nominees.
“Just want to say congratulations to the Dune best picture nomination, to Greig Fraser for cinematography, for best visual effects, special effects, for Patrice [Vermett] for production design and for sound, I believe,” the “Goonies” star addressed the camera.
“Apparently, I’m going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated. This is just how this thing works. It makes no sense to me,” the “No Country for Old Men” star went on. “That’s okay. [Editor] Joe Walker, Denis Villeneuve, you deserve it. It’s an amazing film. I think it was even better than the first one.”
Brolin was referring to an interview he did with Variety in November 2024, where he first said that he believed Villeneuve, 57, was snubbed by the Academy when he didn’t get a “best director” nod for the first “Dune,” which came out in 2021.
“If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting,” Brolin told the outlet in November, referring to the second “Dune” movie.
“It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”
Brolin co-starred in both “Dune” movies, along with Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh.
The sci-fi epic, which is based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, did get nominated for Oscars – it’s in the “best picture” race, along with “A Complete Unknown,” “The Substance,” “The Brutalist,” “Wicked” “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez, “I’m Still Here” and “Nickel Boys.”
Instead of Villeneuve, “best director” nominations went to Sean Baker (“Anora”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”), Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Perez”) and Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”).
A third movie based on Herbert’s novel “Dune Messiah” is in the works.
The 2025 Oscars air Sunday, March 2, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
