Kaitlyn Lowry’s teenage son is stepping into a new chapter with a new name after coming out as gay.
The “Teen Mom 2” alum and her 15-year-old son, Elliott — who previously went by Isaac — had a candid conversation about his identity and sexuality on Friday’s episode of Lowry’s “Barely Famous” podcast.
The teen said the choice to change his name was in part because it “just doesn’t feel like me,” and in part to build a separation between the younger person viewers saw on TV and who he’s grown into today.
“I’m here today to show you who I am — not who you saw on TV for 12 years of my life,” Elliott told listeners. “It’s very important to me because I feel like growing up on TV, it’s hard to show who you really are when a camera is in front of you all the time. It’s harder to be yourself and be more comfortable.”
While Elliott said he didn’t feel it was “necessary” to publicly come out, he decided to share openly because he’s “sick of people” putting his story in “their own words.”
“This is for me, and I’ve built up the courage over time to make it known. Let me have my moment,” he said. “My life is my life, and I can do what I want with it. And for people to take things from my life, like personal stuff, is not OK. If I want to share it, I should share that on my own terms.”
Although Lowry confessed the name change caught her by surprise, she said she’s proud of her son for living his own life and doing what makes him comfortable.
“When you have kids, you have to choose to love them unconditionally because you cannot control who they love,“ she added. “You cannot control what their sexuality is. And for me, I never gave a f–k.
