Kelly Clarkson says new song inspired by Martin Short, Meryl Streep TV romance

Singer-songwriter and talk show host Kelly Clarkson said the romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short on “Only Murders in the Building” was the inspiration behind her newest song, “Where Have You Been.”

The “American Idol” alum explained that  the track — officially released Friday — came to her after watching an episode of the smash-hit Hulu series, which also stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.

“I’ve rarely done something like this but I was watching ‘Only Murders in the Building’ — it’s Martin Short’s face. He says to Meryl Streep’s character in the show, ‘Where have you been?’” Clarkson revealed on her eponymous SiriusXM channel. “He’s like in awe and I was like, ‘Has there been a— has anyone written a song?’ Because the song is happy. It’s like you found something that you thought was almost basically a unicorn and did not exist.”

In the Season Four finale, Oliver Putman, Short’s character, and Streep’s Loretta Dunkin tied the knot in the courtyard of the Upper West Side apartment building the murder mystery series is set in.

Comedy veteran Short has been romantically linked to three-time Oscar winner Streep in real life since last year.

Clarkson, meanwhile, is an admitted superfan of “Only Murders in the Building” — even floating an idea to make an appearance on the show earlier this year during a YouTube Q&A. During that session, she teased new music and said one of her favorite shows had inspired an upcoming song.

And she has her own connection to Short, who plays banjo on “I Hate Love,” a track from the singer’s 2023 album “Chemistry.”
