Kenan Thompson is giving Morgan Wallen the benefit of the doubt.
The comedian, 46, spoke out after the country singer abruptly walked off the “Saturday Night Live” stage over the weekend.
While Wallen, 31, has not addressed the reason for his bizarre exit, Thompson is offering up his initial theory on why country music’s bad boy left the stage without acknowledging the “SNL” cast.
“I don’t know what goes through people’s minds when they decide to do stuff like that. I don’t know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way,” Thompson told Entertainment Weekly.
The longest-running member of “SNL” revealed that he “definitely saw” Wallen’s abrupt departure. The “Whiskey Glasses” singer was the musical guest of the sketch comedy show on Saturday alongside the episode’s host, Oscar winner Mikey Madison, 26.
While he whispered in the “Anora” actress’ ear and gave her a hug as the credits were rolling, Wallen walked right off the stage without saying one word to any of the cast members behind him — a strange move for any “SNL” guest, especially one that has been on the show before.
“You see somebody before you get a chance to say hi or say good job or anything like that, they just dipping,” Thompson recalled of Wallen’s depature. “I thought maybe he had to go to the potty or something.”
“It’s definitely a spike in the norm,” he continued. “We’re so used to everybody just turning around and high-fiving us, everybody’s saying, ‘Good job, good job, good job.’ So when there’s a departure from that, it’s like, hmm, I wonder what that’s about?”
While Thompson shared that he had “never met” Wallen before, the comedian said he “seems like a complicated individual, I guess.”
The Grammy-nominated musician was also the musical guest on “SNL” in December 2020 — but that came after what was supposed to be his debut was canceled because the country crooner failed to uphold COVID-19 protocols.
However, Thompson pointed out that Wallen isn’t the only musical guest who has acted that way.
“Prince did the same thing,” the “SNL” star told the outlet. “I’m not saying Morgan Wallen is Prince, but we weren’t surprised because Prince was notoriously kind of standoffish. It’s just how he was. So we just thought like, ‘Okay, now he’s gone back into fantasyland.’”
He continued, “But Saturday I guess it was just different because it just felt so abrupt. And it was already such a small grouping on the stage anyway. So it was just like, oh wow, that was pretty visible. You know what I’m saying? It was a pretty visible thing.”
Thompson also addressed the singer’s social media post following the show, in which Wallen shared a shot of a private plane with the caption, “Get me to God’s country.”
“The ‘God’s country’ of it all is strange because it’s like, what are you trying to say? You trying to say that we are not in God’s country? We’re not all in God’s country? We’re not all under God’s umbrella? That’s not necessarily my favorite,” the comedian questioned. “But whatever. Moving on, we got a new show. We got Jack Black this week.”
A writer for “SNL” poked fun at Wallen’s post-show picture, too, sharing an image of a Krispy Kreme truck with the same caption: “get me to God’s country.”
While Wallen’s collected backlash for his abrupt “SNL” departure, he’s given no explanation for his behavior. Despite the negative reactions, an insider told TMZ that “there’s no bad blood,” adding, it was “just an awkward moment.”
The Post reached out to Wallen’s rep for comment but did not immediately hear back.
