Kristin Cavallari told the story of “one of the scariest things” that she’s ever gone through.
On Tuesday’s episode of her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast, the 37-year-old TV personality recalled when her house in the Bahamas in 2020 was broken into while she and her family were home.
Cavallari explained that herself, her then-husband Jay Cutler, and their kids Camden, 12, Jaxon, 10, and Saylor, 9, were living in “what we thought was a really safe gated resort” during COVID.
She said the house’s HVAC unit broke so they had workers in the home during the day. That night, she went to bed with Camden in her room where jewelry from her Uncommon James brand was laid out in her closet.
“That night I had Cam in the bed with me. Cam and I were sleeping. Cam and I went to bed early before everybody, so I didn’t really know where everyone was in the house,” she explained.
“I woke up to my bedroom door opening, and it woke me up because of the light from the kitchen. I woke up to a man crawling on my bedroom floor.”
The “Laguna Beach” alum continued, “I was so out of it because obviously I had just woken up. And I go, ‘What the f–k are you doing?’ I said it like that. And this man stands up and runs out the door, and, you guys, he had a ski mask on, full black arms, black pants, the full thing. And I went ‘oh, f–k.’”
Cavallari said that she “didn’t yell or scream” because Camden, who was around 8 years old at the time, was in bed with her.
“You think in those moments that that’s what you’d do, but your instincts just kick in,” Cavallari noted. “I honestly felt like I was in Mission Impossible.”
The mom of three explained that she texted Cutler, 41, but the ex-NFL star didn’t answer, so she had to go looking for her then-husband and her two other kids in the house.
“I felt like a Navy SEAL,” she said. “I go out in the house and I don’t know where anybody is. I go look in the bedroom across the way — no one’s in there. I go upstairs. Jay was upstairs with Jaxon and Sailor.”
“Once I woke Jay up, then I got really nervous,” Cavallari admitted. “Then I start [to get] like, really scared. I started shaking, and I was able to process then what just happened. But until that point, I was not scared. I was really calm. Again, you just are running off of instinct.”
Cavallari said she hasn’t told this story to her kids because “I think would really scare them.”
“He was crawling on the bedroom floor going to the closet to get the Uncommon James jewelry,” she added. “Long story short, he took all of the cash that we had in a backpack. We ended up getting it back. We found out who it was. It was the HVAC guy.”
“That was one of the scariest things that I went through,” Cavallari added about the incident.
“My kids still don’t know, and I will not tell them, probably, until they’re adults,” she shared. “Because I just think some things kids do not need to know. And scary stuff like that, I will take that one. I will hold that one in and take that with me.”
Cavallari and Cutler announced their split shortly after the incident. The exes were married for seven years before separating in April 2020.
“With great sadness, after 10 years together we have come to a loving conclusion to get a divorce. We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of. This is just the situation of two people growing apart. We ask everyone to respect our privacy as we navigate this difficult time within our family,” Cavallari posted on Instagram at the time.
The former couple finalized their divorce in June 2022.
