L.I. driver who killed pedestrian only had learner’s permit: cops

A Long Island woman who fatally struck a pedestrian while driving through Suffolk County only had her learner’s permit and not a full license, prosecutors said Monday.

Cops said Silvia Alvarez De Reyes, 46, initially fled the crash scene in Riverside, then returned two hours later with friends and was arrested, News 12 Long Island reported.

Ever Eli Damian Mazat, a 46-year-old Flanders man, was killed in the collision, according to Newsday. Reyes, of Shirley, was charged with leaving the scene of a deadly accident, a felony.

She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment Monday, News 12 reported. She was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail.

Mazat was found unconscious on Flanders Road near Vail Avenue in Riverside around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Newsday. A Southampton Town cop spotted him while on patrol.

Investigators determined he was likely walking in the road when he was struck by a car that fled the scene, Patch reported. Mazat was pronounced dead before he could be hospitalized.

Neighbors told News 12 they’ve made several complaints about the dangers of walking in the area.

“Either the light gets moved to the crosswalk or the crosswalk gets moved to the light,” Flanders resident Al Lopez told the outlet.

There were two other serious traffic incidents in Suffolk County on Sunday, according to Newsday. In St. James, a Toyota Camry driver was critically injured when he was struck by another vehicle while pulling out of his driveway, and in Shirley, another pedestrian was struck and seriously injured.
