A Long Island man was sentenced Tuesday to more than a decade in prison for a 2023 crime spree that included a hate-fueled assault of an Asian store owner.
Michael Bagley, 34, was handed a 14.5- to 29-year sentence, the Westchester County district attorney’s office said in a press release.
The top charge against Bagley — third-degree hate crime robbery — concerned a March 16, 2023, attack on Lisa Chen at her store in New Rochelle. Bagley shoved Chen to the ground, dragged her across the floor and slammed her head into a door, all while yelling anti-Asian slurs, according to police.
Bagley was also armed with a knife and stole items from the store, cops said. Chen is still recovering from her injuries nearly two years later, according to prosecutors.
“This case demonstrates our commitment to combating violence and hate crimes on the streets of our communities,” Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Roach said.
After attacking Chen, Bagley fled, stole $1,800 from an elderly couple and then ran into an occupied home, according to police. A woman inside the home communicated with her neighbor, who contacted police leading to Bagley’s arrest.
Following Bagley’s capture, cops also connected him to an earlier mugging in White Plains, where Bagley stole a man’s phone, wallet and headphones at knifepoint.
In addition to the hate crime charge, Bagley pleaded guilty in July to two counts of third-degree robbery and one count of third-degree burglary. He also faces unrelated charges in his native Suffolk County.
