A Long Island man has been indicted for murder after allegedly shooting a friend to death following an alcohol-fueled altercation earlier this month, prosecutors announced Thursday.
Jeremias Anariba-Moran, 47, is accused of fatally shooting 40-year-old Gustavo Godinez-Carcamo late on the night of March 15, while the two men were sitting in the back seat of a vehicle parked in front of the victim’s Central Islip home.
The two men — who along with two others had been “hanging out most of the day consuming alcohol” — got into a verbal altercation which quickly exploded into deadly violence, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.
Just before midnight, the defendant allegedly pulled a 9mm pistol and shot Godinez-Carcamo three times, investigators said. The suspect then fled the scene on foot, reported News 12 Long Island.
When Suffolk County Police arrived at the scene, officers attempted life-saving measures on Godinez-Carcamo before transporting him to South Shore University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Homicide detectives later identified and located Anariba-Moran, a Honduran national, after interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage.
He was arrested at his Central Islip home in the early hours of March 18.
According to prosecutors, he has since confessed to the murder and provided detectives with the murder weapon, which he had discarded in the trash.
Anariba-Moran was arraigned on Thursday on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapob. He pleaded not guilty, court records show.
If convicted, he faces 40 years to life in prison.
Judge Karen M. Wilutis ordered him held without bail for the entirety of the case. He’s due back in court on April 25.
