LI man sentenced in stabbing attack of funeral home owner

A Long Island man with a long criminal history was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison for robbing and stabbing the owner of a funeral home in Amityville nearly two years ago.

Jason Funderburke, 39, of Hempstead, was accused of violently attacking a victim for refusing to give him money, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a press release.

On the morning of Aug. 29, 2023, Funderburke and an accomplice approached the man in front of his business in Amityville, on the South Shore of Long Island, showed him a picture of his family and “demanded money from him at knifepoint,” prosecutors said.

When the victim declined, Funderburke and the accomplice attacked him, stabbing him twice before stealing his wallet and phones.

The victim was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital, where he was treated for stab wounds and internal bleeding.

Last month, a Suffolk County jury convicted Funderburke of first-degree robbery and related charges for his role in the violent attack.

On Wednesday, Judge Timothy P. Mazzei sentenced him to 25 years behind bars — a sentence that will “ensure that defendant Funderburke is no longer able to hurt our residents,” Tierney said, referring to him as a “three-time convicted felon.”

Before this case, Funderburke had been convicted of multiple offenses, including three felonies, according to the DA’s office.

He was found guilty of robbery and criminal possession of a controlled substance in 2004 and criminal sale of a controlled substance in 2007.
