LIRR service into Penn delayed, rerouted as train strikes debris from Amtrak train in tunnel

Morning commuters were rerouted into Grand Central Madison Tuesday for roughly an hour after a Long Island Rail Road train hit debris from an Amtrak train in the East River Tunnel.

Train 613 was traveling toward Penn Station in Tube No. 4 when it struck a door that had apparently fell off of an Amtrak locomotive, sources familiar with the incident told the Daily News.

The train continued on into Penn, but the incident shut down the tube for more than an hour while MTA and Amtrak crews inspected the track.

The track was returned to operational status by 9:10 a.m., according to a spokesman for Amtrak, which owns the tunnel.

It was not immediately clear how many LIRR trains were re-routed or delayed as a result of the closure.

The incident comes less than four months after Amtrak began major repair work on the century-old four-tube tunnel, shutting down Tube No. 2 for 13 months to rebuild it after damage from Hurricane Sandy as well as routine water incursion.

Amtrak trains which typically use Tube Nos. 1 and 2 for travel along the Northeast Corridor, have been making use of Tube Nos. 3 and 4 — typically reserved for LIRR service — since the work began in May.
