Long Island garbage truck driver dies in solo crash



A Long Island garbage truck driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday.

“Xavier Angulo Espinoza was driving a garbage truck eastbound on Sunrise Highway Service Road, near Southern State Parkway, when he lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn at 11:48 a.m.,” the Suffolk County Police Department announced in a statement.

The 45-year-old victim, who’s from Central Islip, crashed the vehicle in East Islip on a service Road near Southern State Parkway. He died on the scene.

Police said a passenger in the truck was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The garbage truck was impounded for a safety check. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the fatal crash to come forward. Video posted to local media show flames and thick smoke jutting from the capsized vehicle.
