Long Island man dies after falling into trash compactor

A Long Island man has died after falling into a trash compactor at work, authorities said Friday.

The Thursday night incident occurred while 42-year-old Michael Rutledge, of Baldwin, was working at Arrow Linen Supply Company in Garden City, the Nassau County Police Department said in a news release.

Detectives arrived at the South Street facility shortly after 10 p.m. and took Rutledge to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by the Nassau County Police Department’s homicide squad and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

A company spokesperson told the Daily News that there’s no comment at this time.

Arrow Linen, a family-owned and operated textile supply and laundry company, serves businesses across all five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, as well as parts of New Jersey.

In 2022, New York Times Cooking featured the nearly 80-year-old company in its “On the Job With Priya Krishna” video series, calling it one of the largest restaurant laundry facilities in the city, and the place “where New York restaurants send their dirty laundry.”
