Long Island man in his 60s killed by school bus in crosswalk

A Long Island man who appeared to be passing through a crosswalk was killed by a bus driver making a left turn Wednesday morning.

There were no children aboard the bus when the fatal collision occurred in Floral Park around 8 a.m., according to ABC 7. The victim is believed to have been in his early 60s.

The driver stayed on the scene. It’s not clear if she’ll be charged.

A witness told ABC 7 the victim appeared to be on his way to work. He’s reportedly from Floral Park, which is roughly 16 miles east of Grand Central Terminal. Neither the victim nor the driver were immediately identified.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) warns that school buses have “bigger blind spots, take longer to stop, and need more room to maneuver than a standard vehicle.”

The National Safety Council said school bus-related crashes killed 128 people nationwide in 2023. That nonprofit group said civilians accounted for 16% of those fatalities.
