The superintendent of a Long Island school district was arrested Sunday night and charged with driving drunk in a serious crash in Suffolk County.
Cops said Michael Hynes, 53, was driving in Sayville when he attempted to turn left and struck a motorcyclist, Newsday reported.
The biker, 63-year-old Alberto Fernandez, suffered serious injuries and was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment, according to Patch.
Hynes announced three weeks ago that he would resign his post as superintendent at Port Washington Union Free School District, effective on Dec. 13. At the time, he said he was presented with a “rare opportunity to work in the private education sector.”
But on Sunday night, Hynes was driving a 2019 Honda Civic northbound on Railroad Ave. in Sayville when he attempted to turn left onto Depot St. and struck Fernandez, who was headed southbound, according to police.
Hynes suffered minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital, Newsday reported. His arraignment was scheduled for Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.
The wreck was one of two notable drunk-driving crashes in Suffolk County on Sunday night. Over in Babylon, a woman drunkenly crashed into a boat at the local marina, setting a total of four vessels on fire, according to police.
