Man, 23, killed and 3 people injured in head-on crash on L.I.

A 23-year-old man was killed and three other people were injured in a head-on car crash on Long Island on Sunday morning, police said.

Juan Camilo Alape-Penuela was killed in the wreck just before 3 a.m. Sunday in Flanders, News 12 Long Island reported. Two women in the car with Alape-Penuela suffered serious injuries, police said.

Alape-Penuela was behind the wheel of a Honda sedan when it collided head-on with a Chevrolet Malibu on Flanders Road, near Birch Creek Road, according to Patch. One passenger was ejected from the Honda upon impact, while the other passenger was trapped inside the vehicle, cops said.

Emergency crews rescued the trapped woman and transported her to a local hospital, WPIX reported. The driver of the Chevrolet was also hospitalized with a head injury.

Both vehicles sustained “catastrophic damage” in the collision, and Flanders Road was closed for several hours between Flanders and Hampton Bays.

Suffolk County has led New York in traffic deaths for at least a decade, according to data released last year by the state’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research. In 2023 alone, there were 143 traffic-related deaths in the county.

Last week, a 71-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while walking across the road in Farmingville, police said. Nicole Tumilowicz, 48, was driving a 2020 Toyota when she struck Luis Canales, police said. She was not immediately charged with a crime.
