Man, 55, found dead in Bronx burning car after being shot in head

A 55-year-old man was found dead in a burning car in the Bronx Thursday morning after being shot in the head, police said.

While the city Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine exactly how the victim died, cops expect the case to be New York City’s first homicide of 2026.

FDNY firefighters responding to a 6:50 a.m. car fire on Morris Ave. near the Cross Bronx Expressway service road found the victim dead inside the vehicle.

Once the fire was put out, investigators determined he had been shot at least twice in the head. His name was not immediately released.

No arrests have been made. Investigators are working to determine what sparked the blaze.

The NYPD ended 2025 with a 20% drop in homicides citywide compared to last year. As of Tuesday, cops had investigated 303 killing across the five boroughs compared to 381slayings by the same date last year.

The number of shooting victims in the city has dropped 22% this year, with 853 victims through Tuesday compared to 1,101 people shot by the same point last year, NYPD stats show.
