Man charged for Stamford hit-and-run that killed 12-year-old boy

A Connecticut man has been charged in a hit-and-run that killed a 12-year-old boy earlier this year, police announced Tuesday.

Juan Carlos Umana-Umana, a 41-year-old Stamford resident, surrendered to police on Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest, the Stamford Police Department said on Facebook.

Umana-Umana was charged in connection with the Aug. 2 crash in Stamford that killed Brisley Reyes, who was just about to start seventh grade at Dolan Middle School.

Hit-and-run victim Brisley Reyes.

Reyes was riding a mini bike along with a relative riding a scooter when they pulled over to the shoulder of Courtland Avenue for unknown reasons, according to police.

When the two parties were sitting on the side of the road, Umana-Umana drove by in a 2004 Honda Accord, collided with Reyes and his bike and then sped off, cops said.

Reyes was thrown into a neighboring yard, where bystanders performed CPR before first responders rushed him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Though Umana-Umana drove away from the scene, cops quickly identified him as a suspect. He refused to answer questions and demanded a lawyer when officers first spoke with him, according to police.

After a nearly three-month investigation, Umana-Umana was charged with motor vehicle misconduct, tampering with evidence and evading responsibility.

He was released after posting $200,000 bond and next set to appear in court on Nov. 10.
