A man being held at Manhattan Criminal Court while awaiting a scheduled hearing suffered a seizure and died Monday, officials said.
Terrence Moore, 55, was in a holding cell in the lower Manhattan courthouse on Centre St. near Hogan Place when he had a seizure, according to a spokesperson with the Department of Correction.
Medics were called around 4:10 p.m., and pronounced the man dead in the cell, according to the FDNY.
Before being transported to court for the appearance, Moore had been held at the North Infirmary Command on Rikers Island, a facility that houses individuals with acute medical conditions or disabilities requiring infirmary care.
Moore had an ongoing Manhattan murder case in the robbery slaying of beloved great-grandmother Maria Hernandez, 74, who was found bound and strangled in her Upper West Side apartment Jan. 18, 2023, the Daily News previously reported.
The killing came after he was convicted in 1990 for murder, attempted robbery, and weapons possession, according to court records. He was paroled in 2017, but was arrested later that same year on four charges of forcible touching, police said.
His death marks the second fatality in Department of Correction custody this year.
Ramel Powell, 37, died Feb. 19 in the Otis Bantum Correctional Center on Rikers Island, the Daily News previously reported.
He was incarcerated in July 2023 for a parole violation stemming from a robbery and a Manhattan assault arrest, according to city records.
Powell’s death was being investigated a possible fatal overdose, according to Correction sources.
