Man found dead after standoff with police in New Jersey

A New Jersey man was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with law enforcement over the weekend, state Police and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

The incident unfolded at in Byram Township on Sunday just after 8 p.m., after authorities were called to investigate reports of a possible domestic violence dispute at a residence on Little Paint Way, officials said in a press release. When officers arrived on the scene, they attempted to make contact with a man inside the home, but he  “refused to comply and subsequently barricaded himself inside the home,” according to the release.

A short time later, a gunshot rang out, forcing officers to “take a tactical position while waiting for additional units to arrive,” including a crisis negotiator, state troopers, and officers from neighboring departments. They established a perimeter and authorities made multiple attempts to make contact with the man, but they were again unsuccessful.

Eventually, the state police T.E.A.M.S unit made entry into the residence, where they discovered a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, officials said.

No other injuries were reported, and the man’s name had not been. Few other details were provided.

“The incident is over, and there is no current threat to the public,” Byram Township police said in a statement on social media.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
