Man kills estranged wife, dies by suicide at NJ rest stop

A Maryland man fatally shot his estranged wife, and then drove to a rest stop in New Jersey, where he turned the firearm on himself as law enforcement officers closed in, police said.

Officers with the Anne Arundel County Police Department were called on Monday to investigate reports of a shooting at Smith Bus Service on Bucklina Avenue in Odenton, authorities said in a press release. When they arrived on the scene, they found Monyette Marie Stephenson suffering from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head.

She was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. She was 45 years old.

After viewing surveillance video of the shooting, investigators were quickly able to identify Trimall Stephenson, the victim’s estranged husband, as the gunman. Police said he worked at the bus service station where the deadly violence unfolded that morning, around 10:15 a.m.

Authorities managed to track down Stephenson just hours later at a rest stop in Hamilton, N.J.

As officers approached his vehicle, 48-year-old Stephenson “ended his own life,” the release said.

Both Stephensons were from Middle River, a suburb of Baltimore.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is working with the New Jersey State Police on the investigation.
