Man sets himself on fire during domestic spat on Manhattan street, girlfriend burned putting out flames

A 27-year-old man was hospitalized with severe burns all over his body early Tuesday after he purposely set himself on fire during an argument with his girlfriend, police said.

The man’s gal pal, also 27, suffered burns to her hands as she tried to put the flames out, cops said.

The couple was arguing near their car on Cabrini Blvd. near W. 177th St. in Washington Heights when the man doused himself with gasoline about 12:30 a.m., official said. He then set himself on fire.

As the woman tried to put the fire out with her bare hands, the flames spread to the man’s car, which also caught fire, officials said.

Firefighters quickly arrived and put out the blaze.

Medics rushed the man to Harlem Hospital with extensive burns. He is expected to survive.

The woman was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia with burns to her hands.
