Man shot dead after firing at Texas Border Patrol station

A man opened fire on a Border Patrol station in far south Texas on Monday morning, wounding three law enforcement officers with a hail of bullets before being shot dead, authorities said.

Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, began shooting at the facility in McAllen, Texas, before 6 a.m., McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said at a press conference.

“I cannot tell you how many rounds were fired from the suspect, but there were many, many, many dozens of rounds fired by the suspect toward the building and toward agents in that building,” Rodriguez said.

One of the wounded law enforcement officers was identified as Ismael Garcia, a 10-year veteran of the McAllen Police Department. Garcia was struck in the knee and is “gonna be fine,” Rodriguez said.

Mosqueda was connected to an address in Michigan, and his vehicle had Michigan plates, according to Rodriguez. Numerous rounds of ammunition and additional weapons were found in the vehicle, authorities said. No explosives were found in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

Additionally, Mosqueda was connected to an address in Weslaco, Texas, down the street from McAllen, and reported missing around 4 a.m. Monday, Rodriguez said.

The words “Cordis Die” were spray-painted on the side of Mosqueda’s vehicle. The phrase means “on the day of the heart” in Latin. It was the name of the enemy group in a videogame, “Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” released in 2012.
