A manhunt is underway in Indiana for the person who shot and wounded a judge and his wife inside their home over the weekend.
The violence unfolded Sunday afternoon, at the Lafayette home of Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly. Police were called around 2:17 p.m. to the Meyer residence, located about 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis. When they arrived on the scene, they found Meyer had been shot in the arm, and that his wife had sustained an injury to her hip, police said.
According to emergency audio dispatch obtained by CBS, a 911 caller reported that someone knocked on the front door of the couple’s home, claiming they had their dog, before opening fire.
Both the judge and his wife are in stable condition as of Tuesday morning.
“This remains an active and ongoing joint investigation” involving local and state police, the county sheriff’s office, county prosecutors and the FBI, Lafayette Police said Monday.
Few other details have been provided on the shooting. Authorities have still not yet released a motive or suspect description.
Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski tried to put the community at ease, assuring residents that every available resource was being used to find the person or people responsible for “this senseless unacceptable act of violence.”
He added: “I have tremendous confidence in the Lafayette Police Department and I want to thank all of the local, state, and federal agencies who are assisting in this investigation.”
Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush said the shooting has left her worried for judges in Indiana and around the country.
“As you work to peacefully resolve more than 1 million cases a year, you must not only feel safe, you must also be safe,” Rush said in a statement
“Any violence against a judge or a judge’s family is completely unacceptable. As public servants, you are dedicated to the rule of law,” she concluded: “I know you join me in praying for Steve and Kim and their speedy recovery. Meantime, please remain vigilant in your own security.”
