Terrified Republicans disparaged Trump behind his back even as they donned MAGA hats, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene told “60 Minutes” in her first sit-down interview since announcing her resignation from Congress.
The Republican congresswoman opposed Trump on releasing the Epstein files before her bombshell announcement last month following the president yanking his endorsement and branding her a traitor. She told CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl in the interview that aired Sunday night that safety concerns were a major impetus for her departure.
“It wasn’t a decision that I came to lightly,” Greene said, noting that Trump “was furious” with her for supporting the sex-trafficking victims of the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
“I stood for women who were raped when they were 14 years old, and the president that I fought for, for five years, called me a traitor for that,” said Greene, who has represented Georgia’s 14th District since 2021 and was one of four Republicans to sign a petition calling for release of all files related to Epstein’s sex-trafficking case.
“After President Trump called me a traitor I got a pipe bomb threat at my house, and then I got several direct death threats on my son,” she said. “The subject line for the direct death threats on my son was his words: ‘Marjorie Traitor Greene.’ Those were death threats directly fueled by President Trump.”
Greene also says she became disillusioned with Trump’s apparent abandonment of “America First” policies. While these stances have put her at odds with many in her party, she revealed to Stahl that fear underlies much of her fellow Republicans’ support.
“It would shock people,” Greene said. “I watched many of my colleagues go from making fun of him, making fun of how he talks, making fun of me constantly for supporting him, to when he won the primary in 2024, they all started — excuse my language, Lesley — kissing his a–, and decided to put on a MAGA hat for the first time.”
